Synopsis:
Su Jiu Er is a young, talented, and personable female constable with a keen investigatory mind. She hails from the Qian Kingdom, meaning she is in possession of a rabbit-like spirit – and that she constantly feels cold. She is attracted to warmth, wherever she can find it. During the course of her investigations, she is forced to go undercover, where she meets Han Zheng, a member of the Qi Kingdom's ruling family. Han Zheng is imbued with a wolf-like spirit, which grants him phenomenal strength and agility. It also makes his skin incredibly warm to the touch – a factor that makes Su Jiu Er want to cuddle up to him! But he lacks interpersonal skills, and is harsh and abrasive to everyone he meets. Opposites attract, however - and this unusual duo forms an increasingly close bond as they investigate a strange murder case that involves both of their kingdoms. Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Warm On A Cold Night spoke to the section of my heart that will always unwittingly belong to Twilight. I disliked both the book and movies as a child, but here I am as an adult, finding nostalgia in my Chinese shows lol.
The Werewolves and other such creatures in the show look pretty ridiculous, but if you can suspend your disbelief, it's a fun ride. I had subzero expectations for the drama, and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. The Male and Female lead didn't really do it for me-- they have a sizable age gap irl (FL actress is 7 yrs older) and don't have much chemistry. However, I did like how they were written. And while the ML wasn't the best actor, he was a werewolf and I don't know how one is supposed to do their best work with that.
The side characters and stories were the highlight of the drama. I LOVED the 2FL and I love He Rui Xian (2FL actress). I hope she starts getting female lead roles one of these days! Her character had a really interesting arc and her romance was so quiet, but so good, especially in comparison to the main leads.
Expect themes of tragic love and betrayal, costume silliness (think Disney Channel's Halloweentown (1998)), and some surprisingly good storylines.
Story=4 (Solid), Acting=3.75 (Barely Solid), Production Quality=3.5 (The transformations made me lol. On par w/ halloweentown), Ending=4 (*sobs* I have some complaints), Enjoyability= 4.5 (loved)
