Synopsis:
Modern-day office drone Zou Yan accidentally stumbles into the world of cultivation and wakes up as Liao Ting Yan, a disciple of the Qinggutian Sect. She's soon selected to serve the reclusive Grandmaster Sima Jiao, a powerful cultivator who's been secretly sealed inside a mountain for 500 years. Twisted by isolation and rage, he's cold, hot-tempered, and bent on revenge. Liao Ting Yan doesn't know that "her" original identity is a demonic assassin. But to his surprise, she shows no ill will, no ambition, and no desire at all. Her nature fascinates him. Thus begins an unlikely romance between a villainous immortal and a healing-type "slacker," a connection that defies fate and spans lifetimes. @MDL
Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
When Destiny Brings the Demon follows the trend of transmigration by yeeting our relatable, burnt out Female Lead to a Xianxia realm where she forgets her lack of ambition (and the modern world) when she falls in love with an all-powerful trope.. ahem, I mean the Grandmaster.
Arthur Chen is not an actor I vibe with and I thought he had too much of a baby face to play the all imposing ancient leader. He didn't quite fit the role, and neither did Wang Ying Lu as the FL. WYL is an amazing actress, but she's more suited for contemporary roles. She had a great comedic run in I Am Nobody, but I didn't feel that presence or grounding here. Maybe it was the dubbing, but I also saw rumors online that Zhao Lusi was originally supposed to take the role, and that's the kind of "idol" actress I thinkyou need for these stories.
For a narrative that’s pure romance, it’s impressive how little chemistry the two leads have, especially considering how many kiss scenes there were. Just so many. The writing was pretty good at the beginning; funny and even funnier if you understand Mandarin, but then it all turned into a watered down nothing burger. For non-Chinese speakers, I’d recommend looking at these online recaps to fully understand the jokes: HERE. This is probably where the disconnect came for me, because I didn't have the context to know when the drama was being clever or playing word games. There are some Xianxia coded innuendo's throughout, but it's all pretty tame and skirts around it.
As I mentioned, the crux of the drama is the romance and because I couldn't get behind it, the drama was a bust for me. If you enjoy Xianxia's with a morose ML and a sunshine FL, and you're a fan of Arther Chen, this is probably worth your time. The MDL score is pretty good for a Xianxia, but as for me, Destiny did not, in fact, bring me the demon I was looking for.
Story= 2.75 (Had potential at the beginning but then turned into your average Xianxia), Acting= 1.5 (This is why I don’t like nepotism. Kristen Stewart circa Twilight would have been a better fit for the ML role than this guy was), Production Quality=2.5 (Not great), Ending=2.5 (DRAGGED), Enjoyability= 2.75 (I finished it)
