Synopsis:

The exceptionally gifted Ghost Queen, He Si Mu, unexpectedly encounters the young general, Duan Xu, while out on a break, searching for food. This young general, who carries an item belonging to someone from He Si Mu's past, seems not to be the real Duan Xu. As they test each other through subtle exchanges, He Si Mu gradually uncovers the dark past and aspirations hidden within Duan Xu’s heart. In turn, Duan Xu discovers the steadfastness and loneliness that He Si Mu has endured. Despite the fleeting lifespan of a mortal, no more than a hundred years, and the four-hundred-year-old ghost who still retains the appearance of a young girl, they resist the relentless passage of time through their love. @MDL

Spoiler-Free Mini Review:

Love beyond the Grave was a well-connected story, bogged down by miscasting and some particularly haggard looking makeup. Dilraba, your makeup artist wronged you-- my thoughts and prayers. The Female Lead was so well developed in the first half, but then the writers made her a "noble idiot" and it was just too annoying. The actress was fine, but I think she has outgrown these kind of roles. The Male Lead was also exponentially more intriguing at the start, but became a bit of a useless puppy dog, which really deviated from the independent and devilish character he was introduced as. It also didn't help that the actor has the acting range of teaspoon (to quote Hermione).



The lead couple is actually 9 years apart, and their chemistry couldn't light a 2 oz. Diptyque candle. I loved the side characters and thought they stood on their own as storylines, but the drama eventually botched them as well, and most of them got the shaft. The 2ML (Yan Ke) was extraordinarily 2D and this is the first time I've felt meh about Miles Wei, but I think it's just the tropified writing.



The first half of the story took place in the mortal realm and was the most compelling; My interest faded every time we ended up in the spirit realm. Too much Xianxia can really hurt a Xianxia lol. That being said, the world building in the spirit realm was unique and the sets were so cool, but the characters were dull in comparision while there. My final gripe with the story was the terrible ending. Setting aside personal expectation, in terms of storytelling, so many things happened for no reason. I felt betrayed and I was not alone. The director apparently filmed two endings and after the reception, released the second as a short unofficial 41st episode that has a book accurate ending.



Again, I loved the first 20 or so episodes, but was BITTERLY dissapointed with the ending. If you're a journey over desination veiwer, go for it. If not, this is a miss.



Story=4.5 (I really liked the story for 2/3ds), Acting=3 (Fine), Production Quality=4 (Good), Ending=2.75 (I give two boos), Enjoyability= 3.75
