Synopsis:
Bai Shuo, the youngest daughter of the Governor's mansion, made a vow to cultivate immortality to repay a favor. While on her journey to seek immortality, she encounters the powerful demon king, master of the bright moon palace, Fan Yue. Initially strangers, they gradually went from mutual distrust and manipulation to mutual affection, and eventually, both fell in love. Along with Fan Yue and the two guardians of the Bright Moon Palace,Tian Huo and Cang Shan, Bai Shuo continues her journey. Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Moonlight Mystique shares a fantasy universe with Ancient Love Poetry and The Last Immortal, both of which I have not suffered through. However, Moonlight Mystique can be watched as a standalone... or just not all. I'd go with not at all.
Moonlight Mystique tells the story of a rather smug mortal heroine who must literally catch feelings across the realms with her bedazzled boo so she can become an Eternal. Almost nothing about this landed with me. The inciting motivation is the Female Lead's quest to repay her savior, but for why though? Why is reuniting with her sister not the primary quest? Dang, Gina. The sister really got the shaft. The Female Lead, Bai Shuo, was unlikeable, which I don’t think would have been the case with a more skilled actress. Bai Lu was at her most Bai Lu, and it made me want to pull out my hair. Don't get me wrong, I think she's improved this year with her performances in Unveil: Jadewind and the First Jasmine, but not enough to warrant the number and type of roles she's offered. I don't mean to be a hater, but so many Idol actors get by on their popularity when they have no real acting talent, and with fewer drama roles available, it's become a glaring issue.
The character of Bai Shuo was just a mess. She suddenly acquired godlike medical skills, which felt so random, and her romance with the Male Lead was bland. These two were just repeating their lines to themselves when they were scene partners. I think both of them are anti-chemistry magnets. An eagle scout couldn't get a spark going between them. It should be studied by casting directors worldwide. But maybe the actors had to save their energy to hold their heads up with all the excess-eries (ba-dum tss). They had so many baubles in their updos it felt like an SNL skit.
The costumes were beautiful, but there was a diabolical number of hair accessories. Not even the men were spared.
The contemplations should have been called feelings, but critiques aside, I thought the story weaved together well, and all the plot lines were seen through to the end, and there were some good callbacks to earlier episodes. The highlight was the 2FL—the contrast emphasized the poor acting of the FL. The 2FL served to such an extent that even when she was being evil, she had the audience supporting women’s rights and women’s wrongs. I first noticed Dai Lu Wa in Youthful Glory, and once again, she was a ray of life in this Hades realm of acting. It felt like a very similar situation to In Blossom, where Zheng He Hui Zi infamously outacted the Female Lead of the drama.
Gratitude, second chances, and defying set paths were fetus level themes, but they were present. The opening title gives away the WHOLE plot. But I guess if you’ve seen one Xianxia, you’ve seen them all. As you've probably gathered, this drama offended me to my core somehow. I don't know why I finished. I think I just wanted to understand why so many people liked it. And again, maybe it's just a me thing.
Story=3.5 (Storylines connected well but didn’t connect with me), Acting=2 (Bai Lu needs to put some pep in her step. She really lowered the overall drama experience. The ML actor was monotonous) , Production Quality=2.5 (SO many neon colors. The little fox spirit taxedermies were a thumbs down. But the lunar dress of the FL was stunning), Rewatch Value=1 (no), Ending=2.5 (Cop out), Enjoyability= 2 (I ffwd SO much. I was watching for the 2FL)
