Unveil: Jadewind (S1): Spoiler-Free Mini Review
Updated: Sep 17

Title: | Unveil: Jadewind (2026) 唐宫奇案之青雾风鸣 |
Platform: | Youku, Netflix, Youtube (free) |
MDL & Douban Rating: | 7.8 & 7.0 |
Genre: | Period Idol Mystery (with a mirco dash of romance) |
Episode Count: | 34 |
Parental Guidance Rating: | TV-14: Fear, suicide, many murders, a rather grim and fatal birth scene, some violence. I'd say closer to TV-16 than 14. |
Starring: | Bai Lu (The First Jasmine) Wang Xing Yue (The Double) Zhao Qing (The Immortal Ascension) Zhao Yi Qin (Butterflied Lover) |
RBTS Rating: | 7/10 Stars: Somewhat stale in the romance and acting department, but the palace cases were intriguing and thought provoking. I recommend going into the drama with the mindset that it's not a romance, but solely a mystery. ![]() |
Cast From Left to Right: #BaiLu, #WangXingYue, #ZhaoQing, #ZhaoYiQin, #DaiLuWa
Synopsis:
During the Lantern Festival, Princess Ning Yuan dies mysteriously at the night banquet. Li Pei Yi, Princess of Fuchang County, and Xiao Huai Jin, deputy director of the Astronomical Bureau, are ordered to investigate. Cold on the outside but kind at heart, Pei Yi reads people fast and fights even faster. Huai Jin is meticulous, with a razor-sharp memory. Working in sync, they follow threads through arrogant nobles and an Imperial Guardcommander hiding secrets, cracking the case and unmasking the killer. More eerie palace mysteries soon follow, each tied to the fates of women in the inner court. As they chase the truth deeper into the Tang palace, they also uncover what really happened behind Pei Yi's family massacre fifteen years ago, and the mastermind's plot. @MDL
Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Unveil: Jadewind is a dry, but intriguing investigative drama that shines when it's in the palace, and falls flat when it focuses on personal revenge. The Female Lead is played by Bai Lu, who could lose to wallpaper in an acting competition, but in this instance her character is supposed to be stoic, so it turns out to be what Bob Ross would call a happy accident. The format of the drama is a case breaking procedural with an overarching revenge plot, because is it a C-Drama without the need to settle beef?
It was a little contradictory to have her be an investigative official who dresses in men's wear with a female second in command that no one questions to then then have the theme delve so deeply into misogyny and the suppression of women. Her being an official could be attributed to her status as the princess, but then you have female extras in the background from ep 1 also wearing menswear. That aside, the show incorporates feminism in a really interesting way, and not in the modern sense, but a brand (mostly) appropriate for the time period that aims for women to suffer less, not necessarily achieve more.

The palace cases were fascinating and moving. The case focusing on the consort was especially thought provoking. Screw these men lol. I couldn't care less about the Female Lead's revenge plotline and wish they had just cut it out. Why is every main character in a C-Drama a sole survivor? These scriptwriters must have Destiny's Child stuck in loop in their heads.

Xiao Huai Jin, though the Male Lead, is in a Legend of Zang Hai situation where he takes on the typical role of a "weak" Female Lead, and Li Pei Yi is the muscle in their relationship. The romance was very subtle and I actually liked it, though the chemistry wasn't there. Bai Lu (FL lead Actress) has this magic power to make sparks with even the most schmoozing people instantly snuff out. It's honestly impressive. I just dropped The First Jasmine, which stars Bai Lu, as well as Ryan Cheng, who has chemistry with everyone I've ever seen him act with. Except Bai Lu. She's so pretty, but it feels like she doesn't act with others, but is acting (or honestly, just repeating dialogue) while looking in a mirror. She's a popular actress, so it could just be a me thing.

Apparently, this is getting a season 2!? I don't know if Bai Lu will return as the Female Lead since she previously stated that she wanted to take a break from period action roles due to the physical strain.
Lastly, I didn't expect girly pop to ride an alligator, but slay on queen.
Story=3.5 (Enjoyed the palace cases and the romance), Acting=3 (For once Bai Lu is passable and I call that a win), Production Quality=3.75 (The costumes were great and the fabric looked high quality, but the audio and editing were strange at times. Why whsiper?) Ending=4 (Didn't care for the last arc the story took, but loved how it wrapped up), Enjoyability= 3.5
