Synopsis:
Choi Jun Ung seeks a job, but it's hard for him to get hired. One night, he witnesses a man trying to end his life and decides to stop him. He gets acquainted with grim reapers Koo Ryeon and Im Ryung Gu, who belong to a crisis management team. Their purpose is to prevent people from committing suicide. After Jun Ung ends up in a coma and becomes half-human and half-spirit, he is employed by a company of grim reapers as the newest member of the crisis management team. @MDL
Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Tomorrow is a tale about a man who, after an accident, finds himself in the role of a Grim Reaper whose mission is to stop suicides. His job is to ensure that others have a tomorrow, so he himself can have one as well. Grim Reapers are those who don't want to move on via reincarnation, as well as those who are paying for "wrongdoing". This part was a little iffy because for me because suicide is a very complex issue and I don't think it's about the morality of the person.
The drama tried to make the Grim Reaper Organization seem flashy and cool, but it felt a bit cheesy. However, it proved to be a good thing, becuase it lightened the mood of some pretty heavy stories, and Tomorrow was full of them. There are many "triggering" topics, so I wouldn't recommend watching if you feel vulnerable.
The format of the drama is procedural; each episode deals with the team trying to assist a new person in crisis. (The dog story was a little silly). Tomorrow is not a romance (cries) or even about the bond of the team members, but focuses on each individual finding closure and choosing their path forward.
Grim Reapers are frequently featured in K-Dramas, such as Goblin, Black, Hotel Del Luna and more. They even make an apperance in K-Pop Demon Hunters with the "Saja Boys". While the drama expands the role of a Grim Reaper, the South Korean iteration is quite different from Western depictions:
Jeoseung Saja, known as the Korean Grim Reaper, serves as a psychopomp guiding souls to the afterlife, rooted in ancient beliefs about Death and the netherworld. In Korean mythology, Jeoseung Saja acts like the Grim Reaper, escorting souls—both good and bad—from the physical world to the netherworld. Unlike the singular Grim Reaper of Western lore, the Jeoseung Saja are a class of spectral bureaucrats responsible for this task. Often referred to as the “Messenger of Death” or “Death Angel,” it plays a significant role in Korean folklore, embodying cultural beliefs about death and the transition to the afterlife. - Mythlok (Nitten Nair)
Overall, an emotional watch that could have moved me more, but the intriguing push and pull of Koo Ryeon and Park Jung Gil, episodic rescues, and overarching themes made it worth watching. But I won't be watching again. This is a one and done.
