Synopsis:
Xiao Qiao, a clever girl from the Qiao family, marries Wei Shao, the sharp and kind master of the Wei family, as part of a family alliance. Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Prisoner of Beauty, filmed in 2023, was held prisoner not by beauty, but by the CCP due to the main actress, Song Zu Er, being accused of tax evasion. Thankfully, she was cleared of charges in 2025 after an investigation, and the long anticipated drama was air dropped. Long live crazy C-dramas. Long live freedom. But pay your taxes. We don't need another Crystal Yuan (Bingyan) situation.
The drama is a true enemies to lovers romance that eventually takes the back seat to politics and canal building. I must admit, as I watched I couldn't help but think that Zhao Lusi would have slayed this role. Maybe it's because Love Like the Galaxy is also set in the Han dynasty or becuase the two kind of look alike. But that's beside the point, because the Female Lead actress gave a career defining performance. Song Zu Er was a stand out and I'm so excited to see what she does next. While she definitely brought her A game, what she did not bring was a normal speaking voice. Now is not the time for whispering. Her character, Qiao Man, was fortunately well written as a sophisticated, calm, and clever heroine. A model for female leads to come.
As for the Male Lead actor, Liu Yi Ning, I still feel like he has contemporary vibes. He was menacing and tall and all that, and I actually enjoyed his performance in A Dream Within A Dream, but for a serious "historical" role, I just can't buy it. It's starting to feel like he plays the same role in whatever he's in,and more often than not, his characters are the human incarnation of a trash can. I'm not a fan of ML's who are mean or violent to their boos, no matter the reason.
This brings us to the romance, which is truly an enemies to lovers, but the enemies is more on the ML side. I wan't swooning by any means, but by the end, I eventually rooted for the couple and there were no dead fish kisses, so I will take the win when I can. The side characters had depth and the actors played their roles well. Also, the scene in episode 35 was just so cray, and the Peter Ho (aka the strong scholar) cameos did indeed burn my eyes. Sorry eyes.
I would recommend to those interested in a period idol drama with political teeth, who also enjoy a good enemies to lovers. And canal building. So many canals.
Story=3.5 (Had alot of potential but too bogged down.) , Acting =3.75 (FL can actually act, but ML didn't match up), Production Quality=3 (lower for the type of story they're telling), Ending=2.5 (Everything ep 33 on was just annoying.) , Enjoyability= 3.75, Recommend=If you like a true enemies to lover trope & don't mind fake blood
