Synopsis:
The series follows the story of a group of strangers who are all having a hard time processing a horrible experience from their past. Each of them is going about their normal lives when they are all strangely pulled to a light shop located at the end of a dubious alleyway. Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
The Light Shop is based on a webtoon by Kang Full whose story is set in the same universe as the superhero K-drama Moving, and his other Manhwa, Timing. While in the same universe, The Light Shop can be watched as a stand alone, but keep your eyes peeled for a crossover cameo. And fun fact: This is direcoral debut of the actor who played the bus driver in Moving!
This was so scary in the beginning. I think the peril felt greater because I was on my walking pad while watching, just one jump scare away from falling to my death. The first four episodes are dark (both in tone and lighting) and lean into horror, but the rest of the series (with the exception of the last 5 mins of the last episode) is surprisingly heartfelt and thought provoking. So if horror isn't usually your genre, this might be something to keep in mind, because the show is so worth watching!
The Light Shop has a deliciously eerie tone and you never know what will pop out behind the next corner of the plot. This is an ensemble cast and there really is no main character. I was expecting to see more of Park Bo Young considering how heavily she was featured in the marketing, but she was hardly in this.
The drama is bingeable in a slow, sneaky kind of way, and explores themes of death, human will, and fear, with so much creativity (which I will dive into in my full spoiler review). Be prepared to hide under a blanket, shed some tears, and have an existential crisis.
I would say this is a true MA and is probably too scary for children, and I think the overarching themes might be too mature in terms of comprehension. It's not on the level of Moving or Kingdom in "graphic" content, but something to note.
Story=4.5 (so meta), Acting=5 (everyone slayed), Production Quality=4.5, Ending= 3 (I have thoughts), Enjoyability= 4.5 (ending took some of the shine off), Would I rewatch= Yes!
