Synopsis:

Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
Tower of Whispers was so unhinged, but I was captivated. Send help. The beginning blurred the lines between what I imagine a wattpad story is like, and the romantasy books of booktok, but it does even out. I think they wanted a deranged opening to grab attention, but the rest of the story is worth staying for. Truly, it does not stay as crazy as the first episode, and thank goodness because I was alarmed. Although, if you are a more sensitive viewer, this might not be for you, as it's still more of a "dark" romance.
The story follows Lu Ying Ying (FL), a consort who is reborn after dying at the hands of her obsessive husband, waking up at an earlier time in her life, allowing her to seek revenge and rewrite the course of the future. The first half of the story leans into the enemies to lovers trope (at least on the FL's part) and the rest focues more on the ML's storyline, which is embroiled in court machinations. There is an opposites attract secondary couple that was cute, but the main couple held their own. The two had EXCELLENT chemistry, and I was really impressed by both Jerome Deng (ML) and He Lan Dou (FL).
Being a mini, it is darker than the traditional full length drama with a lower budget and poor editing, but what can you do. Despite the ML being a bright red flag, it was just so bingeable.
Story= 4.5 (It lost steam a little but very addicting), Acting=3 (Not bad for what it is. I really liked the leads), Production Quality=3.5 (Pretty good for being a mini), Rewatch Value=4 (yes), Ending=3.75 (I should have seen it coming), Enjoyability= 4 (God help me, I did enjoy it).
A Note On Mini Dramas:
Mini dramas are usually between 24-30 episodes long, averaging around 10-20 minutes in length. In recent years the distinction has lessoned with the introduction of "Vertical dramas" (100 eps, 1 mn each) and "Short Dramas" (3-24 eps, 30 mns each).
They generally take between 25-40 days to film.
They have smaller casts with "lower tier" actors, less costume changes, and fewer set locations due to considerably smaller budgets (usually between 500,000-1 million USD).
They generally release 3 months after completion of filming.
The lead actors are often individuals who take guest/support roles in full length dramas
Mini dramas are often "edgier" due to more lax censorship, as they almost never air on television, but are strictly released on the web. Because of the shorter timeframe, the material is made to garner shock views so the stories heighten the emotional stakes, with fast paced romances that can lean darker. But they are still censored.
Choppy transitions and plot-holes are expected (lol).
Mini Dramas are rated quite low on MDL. Anything above a 8 is excpetional, and I usually go for mini dramas that are above a 7.4 rating, which is the average. Anything below a 7 is probably the stuff of nightmares.
