Synopsis:
After a freak accident transmigrates Xiao Ning into the Great Jing Dynasty as the disgraced live-in son-in-law of the Su family, he revolutionizes the empire with forgotten arts, transforming tea into ambrosia and turning wine into liquid gold. As commoners clamor for his creations, he shatters conventions by founding the realm's first newspaper, rallying geniuses to empower a princess's political ascent. When merchant queens sneer and his former wife scorns him, Xiao Ning wields commerce as his blade-severing deep-rooted prejudices while carving a legend from scorn. @MDL
Spoiler-Free Mini Review:
A Royal Upstart feels like the spiritual successor of My Heroic Husband with a Male Lead who transmigrated from the modern world into the role of a goofy, poverty stricken matrilocal Han (?) Dynasty husband. But in this case, Xiao Ning extricates himself quickly from this position, and establishes himself as a business mogul with the help of the beautiful Jiang Yun. The drama has a quasi, but not quite harem vibe with three leading ladies: A business rival, a friend, and an ex-wife. But the drama has each lady stay in her lane and I was glad the drama went the monogamous route with a single Female Lead.
The tone of the drama is lighthearted and fun, with lots of business, and no unecessary edge lord mini drama nonsense. The marketing tried to make it look "spicier", but it is indeed quite mild. A Royal Upstart was never compelling, and Xiao Ning was a bit of a Mary Sue, but it was a relaxing time with a Male Lead worth rooting for.
Apparently, there is a season 2 that looks like a reboot, rather than a sequel. Fun stuff.
A Note On Mini Dramas:
Mini dramas are usually between 24-30 episodes long, averaging around 10-20 minutes in length. In recent years the distinction has lessoned with the introduction of "Vertical dramas" (100 eps, 1 mn each) and "Short Dramas" (3-24 eps, 30 mns each).
They generally take between 25-40 days to film.
They have smaller casts with "lower tier" actors, less costume changes, and fewer set locations due to considerably smaller budgets (usually between 500,000-1 million USD).
They generally release 3 months after completion of filming.
The lead actors are often individuals who take guest/support roles in full length dramas
Mini dramas are often "edgier" due to more lax censorship, as they almost never air on television, but are stricly released on the web. Because of the shorter timeframe, they try to get shock views and heighten the emotional stakes, with fast paced romances that can lean darker. But they are still censored.
Choppy transitions and plot-holes are expected (lol).
Mini Dramas are rated quite low on MDL. Anything above a 8 is excpetional, and I usually go for mini dramas that are above a 7.4 rating, which is the average. Anything below a 7 is probably the stuff of nightmares.
