Synopsis:
A die hard fangirl of a former boyband Idol seizes the opportunity to work at the company he created... and meet the man himself. Though a rookie, she is determined to prove herself in her new environment, and catches the attention of not only her dream boat, but of the CEO as well. As work challenges arise, Nam Da Reum finds herself drawn to her capable boss, Kang Ha Gi, while her Idol is determined to become her number one fan.
The Characters:
Character Names: Nam Da Reum (FL), Kang Ha Gi (ML), and Lee Chan (2ML). There are other people, but they don't really matter lol.
Non Spoiler Thoughts:
My Bias, My Boss is a mediocre Rom Com that neither wowed nor enraged, following a fangirl learning to get a grip in a cheesy, but upbeat work environment, where she embraces her girlboss hood, while somehow getting stuck in the middle between two men in power who want to date her lol. The drama gave me the same feeling as Boyfriend on Demand: It wasn’t memorable, but it was something to watch. Rom Com’s these days have become as tasteless as a raw potato, but in this landscape bereft of meaningful romance, at least it’s something to chew on… right?
The set up was interesting because we are given a female lead who is a bit Cuckoo for Coco Puffs at the start, but the drama didn’t have the courage to show a real journey of change, and so retracted most of her stan insanity by explaining it away with sudden reveals. This was both a pro and con for me because having a Female Lead who is a stalker was not the Friday night watch I was looking for, but on the other hand, it would have been an interesting exploration, and would have added spice to the reheated meal of tropes we were served.
If you have run out of options or aren’t interested in a drama that will make you feel anything, may I offer you this oblivion. Kim Hye Jun as Nam Da Reum was a great casting choice and she had killer bangs. It was all worth it just for that. Cha Woo Min (2ML Actor) gave me the creeps and Kang Hoon (ML Actor) remains tall, but for an office Rom Com, they sure didn’t have any synergy with Nam Da Reum (FL). The side characters were a splash of flavor that vanished all too soon, and the story wasn’t anything to write home… or honestly, a blog post about lol.
Thus ends my non-spoiler thoughts of which there really aren't many, spoiler or not, about this drama. But if you are looking for a potato, it’s that… you know, just without salt… and in its rawest form.
(I could not find a good Gif of Yelena (Florence Pugh) talking about Small Potatoes from the new Spiderman movie, so just imagine it here.)

My Bias:
So what’s good?
I surprisingly liked the character of Nam Da Reum, she was a little cheesy and unrealistic in a K-drama angel protagonist kind of way, but Kim Hye Jun has the face and essence to pull it off. And the bangs. Now I want a haircut. Her character is introduced as an obsessed fan who wants to get close to her idol, Lee Chan, but then the drama backtracks and rewrites her character by making him the inspiration for her love of fashion, instead of making him her love. So in the end, her pull toward Apello wasn’t actually her idol, but the company itself. That she then leaves shortly after. Sigh… Lean into the crazy or make her a normal fan like Im Sol (FL) from Lovely Runner.
Her friends were so fun and I enjoyed the spotlight the drama put on how being a fan can give you community. I recently went with friends to the BTS concert in theaters and even though I was unfamiliar with their music, it was such a great time because everyone there was bonded by mutual love for the artists, handed out bracelets, and made friends. Having commonality brings community, and her friends are the best sort. I also wish we were able to see more of Park Mi Mi and Kim Min U’s relationship because they were also so cute.
I liked how the drama positioned Lee Chan to represent her past, while Kang Ha Gi represents her future. She could either stay someone else’s biggest fan, or become her own. While she needed the fan community in the past, and it gave her so much friendship and joy, she has grown out of that by making new friends at work, building her confidence in her capability, and facing her past.
The epilogues were also very cute.

Not A Good Boss in Sight
As someone who used to work in HR, these office dramas stress me the heck out. What do you mean she’s dated both the CEO and the founder of the company?? Is there not a conflict of interest here? Are there not forms they have to sign? Are we not going to address the imbalance of power? The real world has ruined my happy bubble of K-drama couplings. I get that her dating an Idol would cause a scandal, but he was also above her in the chain of command at the company, along with the CEO, and yet that was fine? From the frying pan straight to the fire.
Speaking of fire, it never sparked. I legitimately thought Lee Chan was going to be gay. When the mean girl, Shin Yu Na, said “this will happen to any girl you date”, I totally thought that’s what she was referring to. The drama even tries to play with this and makes it a (tasteless) joke, but ironically the men had more chemistry with each other than they had with the female lead lol. I loved Kang Hoon in The Secret Romantic Guesthouse, but he was not the right fit for this role. He felt so awkward and out of place, and his emotions seemed surface level. But he was still tall.
I’ll get to Cha Woo Min’s CHILLING performance in the next section.
I hated the marketing element of the drama because it was just so fake, and the overdramatic reactions of utter aw at the slideshows made me roll my eyes. It’s these little details I wish dramas would pay more attention to because it felt like slop. Filing for Love is a great recent example of successfully incorporating the office aspect to realistically add more intrigue and create tension. Everything about the Apello/Han setup was so artificial, it never kept my interest.
I also didn’t like how the drama incorporated Kang Ha Gi’s weird talking robot/clock/thing. It felt like they are subliminally trying to push AI in dramas without people realizing. Yuck.

Saja Boy Vibes: The non-appealing, Slightly Creepy Romances
Am I the only one who thought Lee Chan was so creepy! Maybe Cha Woo Min caught onto this and that’s why he gave his character such an unsettling smile. I don’t believe he liked Nam Da Reum at all, he only loved her adoration of him and he liked to see his reflection in her eyes. She was a filter that showed him in his best light and he wanted that devotion up close and personal. He was also in a position of power over her in both work and status, and it didn’t sit right with me. In fact, he felt like one of the demon Saja Boys in K-Pop Demon Hunters when they are sucking everyone's soul.

Say It With Your Whole Chest
My Final critique is this: I wish the drama had fully leaned into the dangers of Sasaeng fans, which is defined as “A private life fan who relentlessly intrudes on the personal lives and boundaries of idols”. I do think Nam Da Reum fell under this category (though to a lesser extent), but rather than having her character confront this realization, the drama instead absolves her. And I get it, this is a rom com and not a thriller, but it would have given the drama something substantial to work with had it acknowledged the characters faults. However, it went the total other direction with it’s messaging because Nam Da Reum WAS a crazy fan, maybe not as extreme as some, but she still left a solid job to seek out her idols company to only then be rewarded with her idol wanting to date her, and as it turns out, he had noticed her long ago and so her devotion was warranted. Ugh. It’s not a good message to send. When the article came out and she was "falsely" accused, everyone in the drama acquitted her: Her Idol, her boss, her co-worker, her friends. They cosigned for her behavior with “reasons” that made it okay, but I think it still crossed a line.
Sasaeng fans are actually extremely dangerous: Members of Ateez found GPS tracking devises on their cars, EXO has had members being tricked into fan’s vans, and so many idols have been doxed. Safety and mental health is often put at risk, and dramas like these toe the line too much with its takeaway. K-dramas and Idols only exist because of fans willing to spend money and time on them, but on the other side, it doesn’t grant fans unfiltered access to whatever they want, nor should a production soften the blow to keep on their good side. "Fans" aren't owed anything, but what they directly purchase. You buy a ticket to access a concert, not the performer. But no one wants to think that they’ve crossed the line (like the FL lol), which is why I think it would have been a more productive use of this drama to show just that.

In Conclusion:
My Bias, My Boss didn’t make me a hater or fan, but it did make me want bangs. And to watch Kim Hye Jun in A Shop For Killers. It was something to do, but one I won’t probably remember to even recommend. Do with that what you will.

RBTS Overall Rating: 6/10 Stars | ||
Story Quality: | 6 | The story was a helping of low effort, leftover rom com tropes, but it was easy on the brain. |
Acting: | 6 | I liked the FL actress, but the fellows felt miscast. The 2ML didn't feel like a strong actor. |
Production Quality: | 6 | Fine... Not Great, Not terrible |
Ending: | 5.5 | Though the FL had bangs, the drama went out with a whimper as it was overshadowed by an unnecessary last minute storyline. (Long live hair puns) |
Enjoyability: | 6.5 | Fine, there were a few cute moments and cliffhangers, but there wasn't tension or intrigue. But I didn't skip that much. |
Would I recommend: Meh... Like Boyfriend on Demand, it was a nothing burger, but if you're hungry for a Rom Com it technically fits the bill.
