Title:

Mr. Sunshine

Platform:

Netlfix

MDL Rating:

Genre:

Period (1870's) Melodrama, Romance

Episode Count:

24

Parental Guidance Rating:

MA: Graphic Violence (not on the level of dramas like Moving, Kingdom, or Happiness), smoking, and minor swearing. The violence is graphic for the most part because of all the blood being shown, but some people do get there throats slit and/or are shot. It does warrant the MA rating). It should be noted it would be hard to do this historical period justice without bloodshed.

Spoiler-Free Mini Review:

Prepare to have your heart wrenched! Mr. Sunshine is a deeply affective and effective story about an American Korean who returns to Korea in 1871 during the start of the Japanese Occupation. You just have to pretend that what the ML says sounds anything remotely like a man who knows what he's saying in English but English speakers do the same thing with other languages all the time.

There is romance but this is not a romance. The drama focuses more on themes of belonging, freedom, identity, and what is worth fighting for. This one will stick with you-- one of the most powerful shows I've ever watched.

In regards to the rating, there is no sexual content but so much violence and blood. Throats are slashed left & right. This does give historical context but some also feels like it was added for entertainment value. If you are a sensitive viewer, it might be worth you time to research the content of the show before watching but I felt like the pros far outweighed the cons in terms of content.

Be prepared for so much humor, history, action, and a very subtle but perfectly delicate romance.
