During the Zhenyuan era, the accidental death of the Bai Ze goddess, who governed the realms of humans and demons, causes the disappearance of the Bai Ze Order, leading to chaos from rampant demon beasts. In response, the demon leader, Zhu Yan, disguised as Zhao Yuan Zhou, volunteers to help form a demon-hunting bureau. Wen Xiao, suspicious of Zhao Yuan Zhou, joins the bureau alongside her childhood friend Zhuo Yi Chen, a skilled detective and swordsman, the aloof archer Pei Si Jing, and the timid doctor Bai Jiu. Together, they confront demon beasts from "The Classic of Mountains and Seas" and uncover the truth behind their violent actions. As they face great responsibility and personal loss, will their friendship and the love between the top demon beast and the goddess overcome the challenges they face? @MDL
Non-Spoiler Thoughts:
Fangs of Fortune stars many a familiar face to Edward Guo's (Guo Jing Ming) filmography, with repeat actors from My Journey to You and Veil of Shadows, though they play different characters here. I'm talking Chen Duling, Cheng Lei, Tian Jiarui, Lin Ziye, Ai Mi, Omid, Zuo Ye to name only a few of the twelve overlapping actors. And Ai Mi and Zou Ye are paired up again, which cracked me up!
The drama is very Edward Guo with intricate world building, Chamber of Secrets color grading (lol), music video fight scenes, and lots of tragic love. The skin smoothing felt so overwhelming that the actors looked AI generated and I couldn't stand how everyone was whispering.
I really liked Wen Xiao and Zhao Yuan Zhou as characters, and I'm a sucker for the found family trope, but the drama was ultimately empty storytelling with a shiny shell. I was hoping for more romance with the ML and FL, but apparently this is a low key BL? At least that's what the Internet says, and I can see it in retrospect.
Why I dropped:
Empty storytelling
Too many filters
Tian Jia Rui (2ML) doesn't work for me as an actor
Why are we whispering?
